American graphic designer and founder of Draplin Design Co.
Aaron James Draplin is an American graphic designer and founder of Draplin Design Co. (DDC), based in Portland, Oregon. Born on October 15, 1973, in Detroit, Michigan, Draplin is known for his bold and utilitarian design style, often incorporating thick lines, vibrant colors, and a touch of humor. He has worked on a variety of projects, including logo design, branding, and print materials for clients such as Nike, Ford Motor Company, and the Obama Administration.
Draplin's work is characterized by its homage to mid-century design aesthetics, with a modern twist. He often draws inspiration from vintage Americana, and his designs frequently feature a retro feel. Draplin is also known for his advocacy of the "blue-collar" design ethic, which emphasizes hard work, craftsmanship, and accessibility in design.
In addition to his client work, Draplin has released a series of popular field notebooks called Field Notes, in collaboration with Jim Coudal of Coudal Partners. These pocket-sized notebooks have become a cult favorite among designers and note-takers alike. Draplin has also authored a book titled Pretty Much Everything, which is a mid-career survey of his work and includes stories, advice, and a behind-the-scenes look at his design process.
Draplin has been a speaker at various design conferences and has conducted workshops on graphic design and branding. He is known for his charismatic and straightforward speaking style, often sharing personal anecdotes and professional insights with his audience. Draplin's work has been recognized by several design institutions and has been featured in numerous design publications.
