Swiss typeface designer and typographer
Adrian Frutiger was a Swiss typeface designer who is best known for creating some of the most widely used typefaces of the 20th century. Born in 1928 in Unterseen, Switzerland, Frutiger studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich before moving to Paris to work for the type foundry Deberny & Peignot. It was there that he designed his first typeface, Président, in 1954. Frutiger went on to create over 30 typefaces throughout his career, including the eponymous Frutiger, which was commissioned by the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and has since become one of the most popular sans-serif typefaces in the world. Other notable typefaces designed by Frutiger include Univers, Avenir, and Vectora. In addition to his work as a typeface designer, Frutiger also wrote several books on typography and design, including Type Sign Symbol and Signs and Symbols: Their Design and Meaning. He received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of graphic design, including the Gutenberg Prize and the TDC Medal. Frutiger passed away in 2015 at the age of 87.
