Portuguese architecture firm known for minimalist designs
Aires Mateus is a Portuguese architectural firm founded by brothers Manuel Aires Mateus and Francisco Aires Mateus in 1988. The firm is known for its minimalist and contemporary approach to design, often characterized by clean lines, white surfaces, and a focus on natural light. The brothers have received international acclaim for their work, which includes both public and private projects such as cultural institutions, residential buildings, and educational facilities.
One of their notable projects is the House in Azeitão, a private residence that features a series of interconnected white volumes that create a play of light and shadow. Another significant work is the Sines Cultural Centre, which includes a library, auditorium, and exhibition spaces, and is recognized for its bold geometric forms and integration with the surrounding landscape. Aires Mateus has also been involved in several renovation projects, such as the transformation of the Santa Marta Lighthouse into a museum and tourist attraction.
The firm has been awarded numerous prizes, including the FAD Award for Architecture in 2017 for their project University of Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá, Colombia. Aires Mateus has also participated in various international exhibitions, showcasing their work to a global audience. Their approach to architecture is often described as poetic and sensitive to the context in which their buildings are situated, with a strong emphasis on the relationship between space, light, and materiality.
