British abstract expressionist painter
Albert Irvin (1922-2015) was a British painter known for his vibrant, abstract works. He was born in London and served in the Royal Air Force during World War II before attending Goldsmiths College, where he later taught from 1962 to 1983. Irvin's early work was influenced by figurative painters such as Walter Sickert and Edouard Vuillard, but he gradually moved towards abstraction in the 1960s. His mature style is characterized by bold, expressive use of color and gestural brushwork, often on a large scale. Irvin was associated with the St Ives group of artists, although he remained based in London throughout his career. He had numerous solo exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in 1990 and a show at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013. His work is held in several public collections, including the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Irvin was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1998 and was awarded an OBE in 2013 for his services to the visual arts.
