About:

Albert Marquet

French painter

b.
1875
1947

Albert Marquet (1875-1947) was a French painter associated with the Fauvist movement, known for his landscapes, seascapes, and depictions of urban life. Born in Bordeaux, France, Marquet studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became friends with Henri Matisse, a fellow student who would also become a leading figure in Fauvism.

Marquet's work is characterized by its subtle color palette, simplified forms, and serene compositions. Unlike some of his Fauvist contemporaries, who were known for their bold and vibrant colors, Marquet often employed more muted tones to capture the atmosphere and tranquility of a scene. His favorite subjects included harbors, rivers, and cityscapes, and he frequently painted views from his window, capturing different locations and weather conditions.
