German contemporary painter known for abstract and figurative works
Albert Oehlen is a German artist born in 1954 in Krefeld, Germany. He is known for his innovative approach to painting, often incorporating digital technology and mixed media into his works. Oehlen studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, where he was influenced by the works of Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. Throughout his career, Oehlen has explored the boundaries of painting, often challenging traditional notions of composition, color, and form. His work is characterized by a sense of experimentation and a willingness to embrace accidents and chance in the creative process.
Oehlen's work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Renaissance Society in Chicago. He has also participated in major international art events such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta. In addition to his work as an artist, Oehlen has also served as a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he has influenced a new generation of artists.
Oehlen's work is held in the collections of many prestigious institutions, including the Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His contributions to contemporary art have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Kaiserring of the city of Goslar in 2018. Despite his success, Oehlen continues to push the boundaries of painting, constantly exploring new techniques and approaches to his work.
