Italian postmodern architect and theorist
Aldo Rossi (1931-1997) was an Italian architect and designer known for his theoretical writings and architectural designs that were characterized by a strong sense of history and context. Rossi was born in Milan and studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan. He began his career as a theorist and critic, writing for the architectural magazine Casabella-Continuità and teaching at the Polytechnic University of Milan. In the 1960s, Rossi became associated with the architectural movement known as "Tendenza," which sought to revive the traditional forms and values of architecture in opposition to the modernist movement.
Rossi's architectural designs often incorporated elements of classical architecture and were known for their simplicity and geometric forms. Some of his most famous works include the Gallaratese Housing Complex in Milan, the San Cataldo Cemetery in Modena, and the Teatro del Mondo in Venice. Rossi's designs were also influenced by his interest in the concept of the "city as a collective memory," which he explored in his book The Architecture of the City (1966). In this book, Rossi argued that the city is a repository of collective memory and that architecture should reflect and contribute to this memory.
Rossi's work was recognized with numerous awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1990. He was also a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Rossi's legacy continues to influence contemporary architecture, and his designs are considered some of the most important examples of postmodern architecture.
