Aleksey Savrasov
Russian landscape painter
Aleksey Savrasov (1830-1897) was a Russian landscape painter who played a pivotal role in the development of Russian landscape art in the 19th century. Born in Moscow, Savrasov studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. He gained early recognition for his naturalistic depictions of Russian scenery and later became a founding member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions, also known as the Peredvizhniki or the Wanderers.
Savrasov's work is characterized by its poetic sensitivity to nature, often capturing the changing seasons, weather conditions, and the simple beauty of rural landscapes. His most famous painting, "The Rooks Have Come Back," is considered a classic of Russian art and exemplifies his ability to imbue everyday scenes with emotional depth. Savrasov was also an influential teacher, mentoring a new generation of Russian landscape painters, including Isaac Levitan.
