British sculptor and installation artist known for architectural illusions
Alex Chinneck is a British sculptor and installation artist known for his large-scale public artworks that often incorporate elements of illusion and surrealism. Born in 1984 in London, Chinneck studied painting at Chelsea College of Art before turning to sculpture and installation. His works often involve the manipulation of architectural structures, creating the appearance of physical impossibilities and defying the laws of gravity.
One of Chinneck's most notable works is From the Knees of my Nose to the Belly of my Toes, created in 2013 in Margate, UK. The installation involved the facade of a four-story house being peeled away from the rest of the building and slumping down into the front garden, creating the illusion that the house was unzipping itself. Another significant work is A Bullet from a Shooting Star, exhibited in 2015 as part of the London Design Festival. The installation featured a 35-meter tall electricity pylon that appeared to have been shot into the ground upside down, creating a striking visual against the London skyline.
Chinneck's work often requires complex engineering and construction, collaborating with various professionals to bring his visions to life. His installations are typically temporary and site-specific, engaging with the history and context of the location in which they are placed. Alex Chinneck has received widespread recognition for his innovative approach to public art, blurring the lines between art, architecture, and engineering. His works have been exhibited internationally and have garnered a significant following on social media, where images of his installations are widely shared.
