Puerto Rican-American comic book and science fiction illustrator
Alex Schomburg was a Puerto Rican-born American commercial artist and comic book illustrator, known for his work during the Golden Age of Comic Books. Born on May 10, 1905, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Schomburg moved to New York City in 1917. He began his career as a commercial artist in the 1920s, but it was in the 1930s that he found his niche in the comic book industry. Schomburg's work was characterized by its detailed and dynamic compositions, often featuring science fiction and superhero themes. He created covers for various publishers, including Timely Comics (which would later become Marvel Comics), where he illustrated covers for titles such as Captain America, The Human Torch, and Sub-Mariner. Schomburg's work was influential in shaping the visual language of American comic books, and he is often credited with helping to define the look of the Golden Age of Comics. In addition to his comic book work, Schomburg also created illustrations for science fiction magazines, such as Startling Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories. He continued to work as an illustrator until his retirement in the 1970s. Schomburg passed away on April 7, 1998, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most prolific and respected illustrators in the history of comic books. His work has been collected and exhibited posthumously, and he has been inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the field of comic book art.
