Mexican film director and screenwriter
Alfonso Cuaron is a Mexican film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor, known for his diverse filmography and his use of innovative filmmaking techniques. Born on November 28, 1961, in Mexico City, Cuaron began his career working in television before transitioning to film. He gained international recognition with his 1995 film A Little Princess, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Cuaron's breakthrough came with the 2001 film Y Tu Mamá También, which he co-wrote and directed. The film was critically acclaimed and received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He then went on to direct the third installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which was praised for its darker and more mature tone.
In 2006, Cuaron directed Children of Men, a dystopian thriller that was lauded for its long, unbroken takes and its commentary on contemporary social issues. The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography. Cuaron's next project, Gravity, was a groundbreaking science fiction film that utilized cutting-edge visual effects to create a realistic portrayal of space. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Director for Cuaron, making him the first Mexican filmmaker to win the award.
Cuaron's most recent film, Roma, is a semi-autobiographical take on his childhood in Mexico City. The film was released in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim and won three Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Cinematography for Cuaron, who also served as the film's cinematographer.
Throughout his career, Cuaron has been known for his collaboration with other filmmakers, including his brother Carlos Cuaron and fellow Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the advancement of film technology, particularly in the realm of visual effects and long take cinematography.
