Alfred Eisenstaedt

American photographer

b.
1898
1995

Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898–1995) was a German-born American photographer, widely considered one of the pioneers of photojournalism. Born in Dirschau, West Prussia (now Tczew, Poland), Eisenstaedt began his career in photography in Germany before moving to the United States in 1935. He gained international fame as a staff photographer for LIFE magazine, where he worked for nearly four decades. Eisenstaedt is perhaps best known for his iconic photograph "V-J Day in Times Square," which captured a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on Victory over Japan Day in 1945.

Eisenstaedt's work is characterized by its candid approach, capturing spontaneous moments with emotional depth and historical significance. He had a knack for being at the right place at the right time, documenting key events and personalities of the 20th century, from the first meeting between Hitler and Mussolini to candid shots of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein.
