French Impressionist landscape painter
Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was a British-born French Impressionist painter known for his landscapes and depictions of suburban life. He was born in Paris to British parents and spent most of his life in France. Sisley was a founding member of the Impressionist movement, along with Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro. He is considered one of the most consistent of the Impressionist painters, focusing almost exclusively on landscapes throughout his career.
Sisley's work is characterized by its loose brushwork, soft color palette, and attention to the effects of light and atmosphere. He often painted en plein air, working quickly to capture the fleeting effects of sunlight and weather. Some of his most famous works include The Bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne, Flood at Port-Marly, and The Road from Versailles to Louveciennes.
Despite his contributions to the Impressionist movement, Sisley struggled financially throughout his life and did not achieve significant recognition until after his death. Today, his works are held in major collections around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Sisley's paintings are celebrated for their tranquility and naturalism, and he is considered an important figure in the development of landscape painting in the 19th century.
