Alfredo Jaar
Chilean artist
Alfredo Jaar (born 1956) is a Chilean-born artist, architect, and filmmaker based in New York City. Known for his politically and socially engaged art, Jaar addresses complex issues such as immigration, genocide, and global inequality through a variety of media including installations, photographs, and public interventions. He gained international recognition for works like "The Rwanda Project," a series of installations and photographs that confront the horrors of the Rwandan genocide, and "Lights in the City," a public art installation in Montreal that spotlighted the plight of the homeless.
Jaar's work is characterized by its conceptual rigor, research-based approach, and ethical commitment to representing the marginalized and the voiceless. He often employs a minimalist aesthetic to create emotionally and intellectually challenging experiences for the viewer.
