American Impressionist painter and patron of the arts
Alice Pike Barney (1857-1931) was an American painter and patron of the arts. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she studied art in Paris and was influenced by the Impressionist movement. Barney was known for her portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes, often depicting women and children in domestic settings. She was also a prominent figure in the Washington, D.C. art scene, where she established a salon that attracted artists, writers, and musicians. Barney's work was exhibited at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Barney was a philanthropist and advocate for women's rights. She was a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and supported the establishment of the Washington Home for Incurables. Barney's legacy includes the Alice Pike Barney Studio House, which she designed and built in Washington, D.C., and which now serves as a cultural center. Her work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
