Contemporary Polish-German sculptor and installation artist
Alicja Kwade is a contemporary sculptor and installation artist born in 1979 in Katowice, Poland. She is known for her works that explore concepts of time, space, and the nature of reality. Kwade studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and has since exhibited her work internationally. Her sculptures often incorporate everyday objects, such as clocks, lamps, and mirrors, which she manipulates to create new, often disorienting, perspectives.
One of Kwade's notable works is In-Between Glances, a site-specific installation at the MIT List Visual Arts Center in 2019, which featured a series of sculptures and installations that played with the viewer's perception of time and space. Another significant work is Against the Run, an installation that features a clock with a second hand that moves counterclockwise, challenging the viewer's expectations and perceptions of time.
Kwade has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Hector Prize in 2015 and the Berlin Art Prize in 2008. Her work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Venice Biennale, the Hayward Gallery in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Kwade's approach to sculpture and installation art is characterized by a scientific and philosophical inquiry into the nature of reality, and her works often invite viewers to question their own perceptions and assumptions.
