African-American abstract painter
Alma Thomas (1891-1978) was an African American painter known for her colorful abstract works. Born in Columbus, Georgia, Thomas moved to Washington, D.C. in 1907 where she would later become an important figure in the Washington Color School movement. She was the first graduate of Howard University's art department in 1924 and went on to earn a master's degree in art education from Columbia University in 1934. Thomas worked as a teacher in the Washington, D.C. public school system for 35 years before retiring in 1960 to focus on her painting career.
Thomas's work is characterized by its use of bright colors and bold patterns, often inspired by the natural world. Her paintings are composed of short, expressive brushstrokes that create a sense of movement and rhythm. One of her most famous works is Wind Dancing with Spring Flowers, which exemplifies her style with its vibrant hues and dynamic composition. Thomas's work was exhibited in several important institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In 1972, she became the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney.
Despite facing discrimination and marginalization throughout her career, Thomas's work has gained recognition and appreciation in recent years. Her paintings are now included in the collections of major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art. Thomas's legacy continues to influence contemporary artists and her contributions to the field of abstract painting are celebrated for their originality and impact.
