Italian Gothic painter known for frescoes in Siena
Ambrogio Lorenzetti was an Italian painter of the Sienese school during the 14th century. He was active between 1319 and 1348, and is best known for his secular fresco series, The Allegory of Good and Bad Government, located in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. This series is considered a masterpiece of early Renaissance art and is notable for its detailed depiction of city and country life, as well as its innovative use of perspective. Lorenzetti was also known for his religious works, including the Birth of the Virgin in the Siena Cathedral and the Maestà in the Church of San Francesco in Siena. His style is characterized by a naturalistic approach to the human figure and landscape, and he is considered one of the pioneers of landscape painting. Lorenzetti's work was influenced by his brother, Pietro Lorenzetti, who was also a prominent Sienese painter, and by the works of Giotto. Ambrogio Lorenzetti's contributions to the development of Italian Renaissance art are significant, and his works continue to be studied and admired for their beauty and historical importance.
