French cabinetmaker and furniture designer
Andre-Charles Boulle was a French cabinetmaker, who is widely considered to be one of the most important furniture designers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He is best known for his technique of inlaying brass and tortoiseshell, known as Boulle work, which became highly fashionable and was imitated throughout Europe. Boulle was appointed ébéniste, cabinetmaker, to King Louis XIV in 1672 and worked at the Gobelins Manufactory, where he produced furniture and other decorative items for the royal palaces. His work is characterized by its elaborate marquetry, intricate ormolu mounts, and classical motifs. Boulle's designs were influenced by the work of contemporary artists such as Charles Le Brun and Jean Berain, and he often collaborated with other craftsmen, including bronze workers and clockmakers, to create his pieces. His legacy includes a large body of work that is held in collections around the world, including the Louvre Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Boulle's influence on furniture design continued long after his death, with his style being revived in the 19th century during the Napoleon III period.
