French fashion designer known for futuristic designs
Andre Courreges was a French fashion designer known for his futuristic and modernist designs. Born in 1923 in Pau, France, Courreges began his career in fashion working for the esteemed designer Cristobal Balenciaga. In 1961, Courreges founded his own fashion house, Maison de Courreges, where he quickly gained recognition for his innovative and avant-garde designs. He is often credited with the invention of the miniskirt, although this claim is also attributed to Mary Quant. Courreges' designs were characterized by their geometric shapes, bold colors, and use of unconventional materials such as vinyl and plastic. His 1964 Space Age collection is considered one of his most iconic, featuring futuristic silhouettes and accessories such as white boots and goggles. Courreges' influence on fashion extended beyond his own designs, as he also mentored other designers such as Issey Miyake. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most innovative and influential fashion designers of the 20th century.
