American photographer
Andreas Feininger (1906–1999) was a German-American photographer and writer, renowned for his black-and-white photography that often focused on architectural forms and natural landscapes. Born in Paris to a family of artists, including his father, the painter Lyonel Feininger, Andreas initially studied architecture at the Bauhaus. He later shifted his focus to photography, emigrating to the United States in 1939 to escape the rise of Nazism. Feininger is perhaps best known for his long association with Life magazine, where he worked for over two decades and produced some of the publication's most iconic images.
Feininger's work is characterized by its meticulous composition, technical precision, and a keen eye for detail. He often used telephoto lenses to capture the intricacies of both natural and man-made structures, from the skeletal framework of marine organisms to the towering skyscrapers of New York City. His photographs are not just visual records but are imbued with an artistic sensibility that elevates them to the realm of fine art.
