Canadian figurative painter known for bold, colorful portraits
Andrew Salgado is a Canadian-born painter known for his large-scale figurative works that often explore themes of identity, sexuality, and masculinity. Born in 1982 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Salgado received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia in 2005 and his Master of Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, UK, in 2009. His work is characterized by a bold and expressive use of color, texture, and gestural brushwork, often incorporating mixed media elements such as collage and hand-dyed fabrics.
Salgado's paintings often depict solitary figures, sometimes fragmented or obscured, which challenge traditional representations of the male form and masculinity. His work has been exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Beers London gallery in the UK, the Christopher Moller Gallery in South Africa, and the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art in the United States. He has also participated in group exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bangkok, among others.
In addition to his painting practice, Salgado has engaged in various curatorial projects and has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in the arts. His work is held in private and public collections worldwide, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including the Threadneedle Prize in 2013 and a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada. Salgado currently lives and works in London, UK.
