About:

Ann Veronica Janssens

Belgian contemporary visual artist known for light installations and sensory experiences

b.
1956

Ann Veronica Janssens is a contemporary visual artist born in 1956 in Folkestone, England. She is known for her immersive installations that explore the sensory experiences of light, color, and space. Janssens studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre in Brussels, Belgium, and has been working as an artist since the 1980s. Her work often involves the use of translucent materials, such as glass or plastic, and natural phenomena, such as mist or fog, to create environments that challenge the viewer's perception of reality.

Janssens has exhibited her work internationally, with solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Wiels Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and the Serpentine Galleries in London. She has also participated in group exhibitions and biennials, including the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial. In 1999, she represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale with her installation Blue, Red and Yellow, which consisted of three rooms filled with colored mist, creating a disorienting and immersive experience for visitors.

In addition to her installations, Janssens has also created public art projects, such as her work Magic Mirror, which was installed at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London for the 2012 Olympics. Her work often invites viewers to engage with the space in a physical and experiential way, encouraging a heightened awareness of their surroundings and the act of perception itself.

Janssens has received numerous awards for her work, including the Flemish Culture Prize for Visual Arts in 1998 and the Francqui Prize in 2011. Her work is held in the collections of major institutions, such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London. Janssens continues to live and work in Brussels, where she is a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene.
