British still-life painter known for floral compositions
Anne Cotterill (1933-2010) was a British painter known for her detailed and realistic depictions of flowers. She was born in Somerset, England and studied at the Goldsmiths' College in London. Cotterill's work is characterized by her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to capture the natural beauty of her floral subjects. She often painted from life, setting up arrangements of flowers in her studio and working from direct observation. Cotterill's paintings have been exhibited widely in the UK, including at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal West of England Academy. Her work is held in private collections around the world. Cotterill's paintings are often compared to the work of the Dutch Old Masters, due to her skillful use of light and shadow and her ability to create a sense of depth and texture in her work. She was also influenced by the British botanical artist Lilian Snelling, whose work she admired for its scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. Cotterill's own work has been praised for its combination of scientific precision and aesthetic appeal. She published several books of her paintings, including The Anne Cotterill Flower Collection and Anne Cotterill's Flowers in Watercolour.
