Russian Constructivist sculptor and installation artist
Antoine Pevsner was a Russian-born French sculptor and installation artist, known for his abstract and geometric works. Born in 1886 in Belarus, Pevsner studied at the Kiev Art School before moving to Paris in 1911. He was associated with the Constructivist movement and was a founding member of the group Abstraction-Création. Pevsner's work often explored the relationship between space and form, and he is best known for his series of "developable surfaces" sculptures, which were made from materials such as metal and plastic. These works were characterized by their smooth, curved surfaces and intricate, interlocking shapes. Pevsner's sculptures were exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London. He also created several large-scale public installations, such as the Monument to the Third International in Moscow. Pevsner's work has been influential in the development of modern sculpture and installation art, and he is considered one of the pioneers of the Constructivist movement. He died in Paris in 1962.
