Anton Mauve
Dutch painter
Anton Mauve (1838–1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading figure in the Hague School, an art movement known for its focus on natural landscapes and rural scenes. Born in Zaandam, Netherlands, Mauve received his early training from his uncle, Pieter Frederik van Os, and later studied under Wouter Verschuur. He gained prominence for his pastoral scenes featuring animals and shepherds, often set against the backdrop of the Dutch countryside. Mauve's work was highly influential, and he served as an early mentor to his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh, guiding him in the techniques of drawing and watercolor.
Mauve's art is characterized by its subdued color palette, meticulous attention to detail, and a sense of tranquility and simplicity. He often worked in watercolors and etchings in addition to oil paintings, capturing the subtle nuances of light and atmosphere in his landscapes.
