British landscape and genre painter
Arthur Claude Strachan (1865-1938) was a British painter known for his idyllic watercolor landscapes and rural scenes. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Strachan moved to Liverpool as a child and later studied at the Liverpool School of Art. He began his career as an illustrator for magazines and books, but eventually transitioned to painting full-time. Strachan's work often depicted the English and Welsh countryside, with a particular focus on the picturesque villages and gardens. His paintings are characterized by their delicate brushwork, soft color palette, and attention to detail. Strachan's work was widely exhibited during his lifetime, including at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Today, his paintings can be found in private collections and museums, such as the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Despite his popularity during his lifetime, Strachan's work fell into relative obscurity after his death, but has since gained renewed interest among collectors of Victorian and Edwardian art.
