American Tonalist painter and muralist
Arthur Frank Mathews (1860-1945) was an American painter and muralist known for his contributions to the Arts and Crafts Movement in California. Born in Wisconsin, Mathews studied at the San Francisco School of Design and later in Paris at the Académie Julian. Upon his return to the United States, he became an influential figure in the San Francisco art scene, serving as the director of the School of Design and co-founding the California Society of Artists.
Mathews' work is characterized by its focus on the landscape and mythology of California, often incorporating elements of Art Nouveau and Symbolism. His paintings often feature figures set against the backdrop of the California coast or in allegorical settings, with a muted color palette and a sense of serenity. Some of his notable works include The End of the Trail and California Spring.
In addition to his painting, Mathews was also known for his work in furniture design and interior decoration, creating pieces that reflected the ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement. He and his wife, Lucia Kleinhans Mathews, also an artist and designer, collaborated on many projects, including the design of the interior of the Swedenborgian Church in San Francisco.
Mathews' work has been exhibited in various institutions, including the Oakland Museum of California and the de Young Museum. His contributions to the Arts and Crafts Movement and the cultural landscape of California have cemented his legacy as an important figure in American art history.
