About:

Arthur Hughes

English painter

b.
1832
1915

Arthur Hughes (1832–1915) was a British painter and illustrator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, although he was never an official member of the group. Born in London, Hughes studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and was heavily influenced by the works of John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He gained recognition for his romantic and often melancholic depictions of medieval and Shakespearean subjects, as well as his detailed landscapes and portraits.

Hughes' work is characterized by its vivid color palette, intricate detailing, and emotional depth. His most famous painting, "April Love," received critical acclaim when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856 and remains one of the iconic images of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
