British Victorian-era painter known for depicting children and animals
Arthur John Elsley (1860-1952) was a British painter known for his depictions of children and animals, particularly dogs. He was born in London and studied at the South Kensington School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Elsley began his career as an illustrator for magazines and books, but later transitioned to painting. His work was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other institutions. Elsley's paintings often featured sentimental scenes of children playing with pets, and he was known for his ability to capture the expressions and personalities of his subjects. Some of his most famous works include The Favourite, Playmates, and Can't You Talk?. Elsley's work fell out of favor in the mid-20th century, but has since experienced a resurgence in popularity among collectors of Victorian art.
