Scottish watercolor painter known for Orientalist scenes
Arthur Melville (1855-1904) was a Scottish painter known for his watercolor and oil paintings. He was associated with the Glasgow Boys, a group of artists who sought to challenge the academic painting styles of the time and were influenced by the naturalism of the French Impressionists. Melville's work is characterized by his use of vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes, often depicting scenes of everyday life, landscapes, and exotic locations from his travels. He was particularly skilled in the use of watercolor, and his technique of allowing the paint to flow freely on the paper was innovative for the time. Some of his notable works include The Sapphire Sea, An Arab Interior, and The Little Bullfight: 'Bravo Toro'. Melville's work was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, among other institutions. His paintings are held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and the Tate Gallery. Melville's contribution to Scottish art and his influence on the Glasgow Boys have solidified his place in the history of British painting.
