Ary Scheffer
Dutch-French painter
Ary Scheffer (1795–1858) was a Dutch-French Romantic painter known for his historical and literary subjects, as well as his portraits of prominent figures of his time. Born in Dordrecht, Netherlands, Scheffer moved to Paris at a young age and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. He gained fame for his depictions of scenes from the works of Dante, Goethe, and Lord Byron, among others. His painting "Gretchen" based on Goethe's "Faust" received critical acclaim and established him as a leading Romantic artist.
Scheffer's work is characterized by its emotional intensity, intricate detail, and often somber themes. He was also a sought-after portraitist, capturing likenesses of notable individuals such as Chopin, Liszt, and the royal family of Orléans. Beyond painting, Scheffer was active in the intellectual and social circles of Paris, hosting a famous salon attended by artists, writers, and politicians.
