Augustus John
Painter
Augustus John (1878–1961) was a Welsh painter, draughtsman, and etcher, widely considered one of the most prominent British artists of his time. Born in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional drawing skills. John initially gained fame for his portraiture, capturing the likenesses of notable figures such as George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Hardy, and T.E. Lawrence, among others. He was a member of the Royal Academy and was even appointed as an official war artist during World War I.
John's artistic style evolved over the years, incorporating elements of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and even elements of Eastern art. His work is characterized by its emotional intensity, bold use of color, and a certain bohemian flair that reflected his own unconventional lifestyle. Beyond portraiture, he also painted landscapes and scenes of Romani culture, with whom he had a lifelong fascination.
