Tunisian-born couturier and shoe designer
Azzedine Alaia was a Tunisian-born couturier and shoe designer, known for his sculptural, body-conscious designs. Born in 1940, Alaia studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis before moving to Paris in 1957 to work in fashion design. He initially worked for Christian Dior and Guy Laroche, before starting his own atelier in the late 1970s. Alaia gained international fame in the 1980s, with his designs being worn by high-profile figures such as Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, and Michelle Obama. His work often featured precise tailoring, innovative fabrics, and intricate detailing, with a focus on enhancing the female form. Alaia's designs have been exhibited in major institutions such as the Groninger Museum and the Palais Galliera. He passed away in 2017, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most respected and influential designers in the fashion industry.
