Canadian-American cartoonist and illustrator, known for New Yorker covers
Barry Blitt is a Canadian-born illustrator and cartoonist, best known for his work in The New Yorker magazine. Born in 1958 in Montreal, Quebec, Blitt studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. He began his career as an illustrator in Canada before moving to the United States in the late 1980s. Blitt's distinctive style, characterized by its wit and watercolor technique, has graced the cover of The New Yorker over 100 times since his first cover in 1992. His work often addresses political and social issues, and he is known for his satirical depictions of contemporary figures and events.
Blitt has received numerous awards for his work, including the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year from the National Cartoonists Society in 2020. In addition to his work for The New Yorker, Blitt's illustrations have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Time magazine. He has also illustrated children's books, including The 39 Apartments of Ludwig Van Beethoven and Once Upon a Time, the End (Asleep in 60 Seconds).
In 2017, Blitt published a collection of his work titled Blitt, which features his most notable illustrations and covers, along with commentary and essays from colleagues and critics. His work continues to be influential and widely recognized for its sharp commentary and distinctive style.
