Italian comic book artist and illustrator known for satirical and humorous style
Benito Jacovitti (1923-1997) was an Italian comic book and graphic novel artist known for his distinctive and exaggerated style. He began his career in the 1940s, working for the children's magazine Il Vittorioso, where he created his first popular character, Pippo. Jacovitti's work is characterized by its humor, satire, and surreal imagery, often featuring elongated figures and an abundance of visual gags. He was influenced by the absurdity of the Dada movement and the satirical edge of American cartoonists like Al Capp.
Throughout his career, Jacovitti created a wide range of characters and series, including Cocco Bill, a parody of American Westerns, and Zorry Kid, a spoof of the masked hero Zorro. His work was published in numerous magazines and newspapers, such as Il Giorno dei Ragazzi, Corriere dei Piccoli, and Il Male. Jacovitti's influence extended beyond Italy, with his comics being translated into several languages and gaining an international following.
In addition to his comic strips, Jacovitti also worked on advertising campaigns, illustrated books, and created political cartoons. His unique style and contribution to the medium of comics have been recognized with several awards, including the Yellow Kid Award, considered the "Oscar" of Italian comics. Jacovitti's legacy continues to be celebrated through exhibitions and retrospectives, such as the one held at the Museo Luzzati in Genoa in 2013.
