Bert Hardy

Bert Hardy was a British photojournalist born in 1913, best known for his work with the Picture Post magazine, where he served as a staff photographer. Hardy gained fame for his candid and empathetic photographs that captured the essence of British life, particularly during World War II and the post-war period. His iconic images, such as those taken during the Blitz or his series on the Elephant and Castle neighborhood in London, are considered seminal works in the genre of social documentary photography.
Hardy was largely self-taught and began his career as a freelance photographer before joining the Picture Post in 1941. His work took him to various international locations, including Korea and Indochina, where he covered conflicts. Despite the often grim subject matter, Hardy's photographs are noted for their humanity and warmth.
