African-American assemblage and collage artist
Betye Saar is an American artist known for her work in the medium of collage, as well as assemblage, printmaking, and installation art. Born in 1926 in Los Angeles, California, Saar has been a prominent figure in the Black Arts Movement and is recognized for her exploration of African American identity, spirituality, and the intersection of race and gender. Saar's work often incorporates found objects, personal memorabilia, and cultural symbols to create complex visual narratives. One of her most famous works is The Liberation of Aunt Jemima, a mixed-media assemblage created in 1972 that critiques racial stereotypes and the commodification of Black womanhood. Saar's work has been exhibited in numerous institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She has received several awards throughout her career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Fine Arts from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Saar continues to create and exhibit her work, contributing to the dialogue on race, gender, and history through her powerful and evocative art.
