Pioneering French street artist
Blek le Rat, born Xavier Prou, is a French street artist recognized as one of the pioneers of stencil graffiti art. Emerging in the early 1980s, he is often credited with popularizing the use of stencils in urban art, a technique that allows for rapid reproduction of images. His work frequently features life-sized depictions of people, animals, and other figures, often imbued with social and political commentary. Notable pieces include The Man Who Walks Through Walls and The Beggar. Blek le Rat's influence extends internationally, with his techniques and themes resonating in the works of subsequent street artists, including Banksy. His contributions to the street art movement have been documented in various exhibitions and publications, solidifying his status as a seminal figure in contemporary urban art.
