Carlo Dolci (1616-1686) was an Italian Baroque painter, known for his highly detailed and devotional works. Born in Florence, Dolci was a leading figure in the Florentine school of painting, and his works were highly sought after by both private collectors and religious institutions. He was particularly renowned for his ability to capture the emotional intensity and spiritual depth of his subjects, often depicting religious figures such as saints and the Virgin Mary with a delicate and refined touch. Dolci's use of color and light was also notable, with his paintings often characterized by their soft, glowing hues and meticulous attention to detail.
Among Dolci's most famous works are The Madonna in Glory, Saint Cecilia, and The Penitent Magdalene. These paintings exemplify Dolci's skill in rendering the human form with a sense of grace and serenity, as well as his ability to convey a sense of piety and devotion. Dolci's work was influential in his time, and he had a number of prominent pupils, including Onorio Marinari and Giovanni Battista Marmi. Today, Dolci's paintings can be found in major museums and collections around the world, including the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Louvre Museum in Paris. Despite his success during his lifetime, Dolci's reputation declined in the centuries following his death, and he was largely forgotten until a resurgence of interest in Baroque art in the 20th century.
