German visual artist and electronic musician
Carsten Nicolai is a German visual artist and musician known for his work at the intersection of art, sound, and science. Operating under the pseudonym Alva Noto, Nicolai has produced a significant body of work that explores the relationship between visual and auditory phenomena. His installations often utilize minimalist aesthetics and are characterized by their use of digital technology to create immersive environments. Notable works include univrs/uniscope version, an audiovisual performance that integrates real-time data processing, and crt mgn, an installation that examines the properties of cathode ray tube monitors. Nicolai's contributions to the field extend to his role as a co-founder of the Raster-Noton label, which has been influential in the development of electronic music. His work has been exhibited internationally in institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
