Cleve Gray
American Abstract Expressionist painter
Cleve Gray was an American painter known for his contributions to Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. He studied at Princeton University and later in Paris under the tutelage of Jacques Villon and André Lhote. Gray's work is characterized by its large-scale canvases and the use of vibrant, sweeping colors. Notable works include Threnody, a series of 14 large paintings created in response to the Vietnam War, and Movement, which exemplifies his exploration of dynamic forms and spatial relationships. His paintings are held in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Gray was also an accomplished writer and editor, contributing to the understanding of modern art through his essays and editorial work.
