Clyfford Still
American Abstract Expressionist painter
Clyfford Still was an American painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. His work is characterized by large-scale canvases featuring jagged, irregular fields of color that often evoke a sense of raw, elemental force. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Still's paintings are notable for their lack of recognizable forms and their emphasis on pure abstraction. Notable works include PH-385 and 1957-D No. 1. Still's approach to painting was deeply personal, and he often eschewed the commercial art world, choosing instead to retain control over the exhibition and distribution of his work. His legacy is preserved in the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado, which houses a significant portion of his oeuvre.
