British modernist painter
David Bomberg was a British painter associated with the Vorticist movement and later known for his expressive landscapes and portraits. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and was influenced by Cubism and Futurism, which is evident in early works such as The Mud Bath and In the Hold. His style evolved significantly over his career, moving from geometric abstraction to a more fluid and dynamic approach. Bomberg served in World War I, which profoundly impacted his work, leading to a more somber and reflective tone in pieces like Sappers at Work. Post-war, he traveled extensively, capturing the landscapes of Spain, Palestine, and Cyprus. Despite facing critical neglect during his lifetime, Bomberg's contributions to modern British art have been reassessed and recognized posthumously.
