Dorothy Johnstone
Scottish portrait and landscape painter
Dorothy Johnstone was a Scottish painter associated with the Edinburgh School, known for her contributions to early 20th-century art. She studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and later became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Johnstone's work primarily focused on portraiture and landscapes, characterized by a distinctive use of color and light. Notable works include The Blue Hat and The Yellow Gloves. Her career was interrupted by World War I, during which she served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse. Post-war, she resumed painting and teaching, influencing a generation of Scottish artists. Johnstone's paintings are held in various public and private collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland.
