Edward Poynter
British Neoclassical painter
Edward Poynter was an English painter and designer associated with the Victorian era, known for his historical and classical subjects. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and later became its president. Poynter's works are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and adherence to academic standards. Notable paintings include Israel in Egypt, The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, and Diadumene. He also contributed to the field of decorative arts, designing mosaics for the Central Lobby of the Palace of Westminster. Poynter was knighted in 1896 and served as the director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904.
