American graphic designer and artist
Elaine Lustig Cohen was an American graphic designer, artist, and archivist known for her pioneering work in modernist design. She began her career in the 1950s, initially collaborating with her husband, the renowned graphic designer Alvin Lustig, and continued to develop her own distinctive style after his death. Her work spans a variety of media, including book covers, signage, and branding, with notable projects such as the signage for the Seagram Building in New York City and book covers for New Directions Publishing. Cohen's design approach was characterized by a clean, geometric aesthetic and a keen sense of typography, which placed her among the leading figures in mid-20th-century American graphic design. In addition to her design work, she was an avid collector and archivist of modernist art and design, contributing significantly to the preservation and study of the field.
