Iconic Italian avant-garde fashion designer
Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian fashion designer known for her innovative and avant-garde designs in the early to mid-20th century. She founded her eponymous fashion house in Paris in 1927 and quickly gained recognition for her surrealist-inspired creations. Schiaparelli collaborated with prominent artists such as Salvador Dalí, leading to iconic pieces like the Lobster Dress and the Tear Dress. Her work often featured bold colors, unusual materials, and whimsical elements, challenging traditional notions of fashion. Schiaparelli is credited with popularizing the color "shocking pink" and introducing the concept of the runway show as a theatrical event. Her designs were worn by notable figures including Wallis Simpson and Marlene Dietrich. The fashion house closed in 1954 but was revived in the 21st century, continuing her legacy of innovation and artistic collaboration.
