Emily Carr
Canadian modernist painter
Emily Carr was a Canadian painter and writer associated with the Group of Seven and known for her depictions of Indigenous culture and the landscapes of British Columbia. Her early work was influenced by the Post-Impressionist movement, but she later developed a distinctive style characterized by bold brushwork and vibrant colors. Notable works include Big Raven, Totem Walk at Sitka, and Forest, British Columbia. Carr's interest in Indigenous themes was sparked by her travels to Indigenous villages and her study of their art and culture. She was also an accomplished writer, with her book Klee Wyck winning the Governor General's Award for Literary Merit.
