Japanese mecha anime series
Evangelion is a Japanese media franchise created by Hideaki Anno and produced by Gainax. The franchise began with the anime television series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which aired from October 1995 to March 1996. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a group of teenagers piloting giant mechs known as "Evangelions" to protect Earth from mysterious beings called "Angels." The narrative explores complex themes such as existentialism, psychoanalysis, and religious symbolism.
The original series was followed by several films, including The End of Evangelion (1997), which serves as an alternate ending to the television series. In 2007, the franchise was rebooted with the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, starting with Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. This new series reimagines the original story with updated animation and new plot elements.
Evangelion has had a significant impact on both Japanese and global pop culture, influencing numerous other works in the anime and science fiction genres. The franchise has expanded into various media, including manga, video games, and merchandise. It has also been the subject of academic analysis and critique, particularly regarding its psychological and philosophical content.
